Smart Jr.'s Dry Erase Board Makeover

Smart Girls DIY has moved to SmartGirlsDIY.com and this post can now be found here
The apple doesn't far fall from the tree.  I've been waiting for Smart Jr to write about this project for a while.  I know she would get to it one day, but right now she's at basketball practice and her brother and sister are asleep, so I thought I'd share.  Plus, that will allow me to procrastinate myself.

...Anyway, we had these two magnetic dry erase boards that I used to use in my office in our last house.  I don't remember what color they were originally, probably a nice white, but for some reason I decided to paint them gold.  They matched the built-ins in that room, so I'm sure that's why.  But really, WHY did I paint the built-ins gold?  I had a gold couch.  Was that why?  And it was oops paint.  Of course.  And now that I look at the picture I remember how my beloved office had to double as a guest room after my kid count started to rise.  I sold that gold couch to a very good home. Sniffle.
I figured it was time to teach the kid to spray paint, so I showed her how to tape off the dry erase portion and how to sand the painted surfaces.
She did a good job for her first time spray painting.  Interesting form, but she got the job done.
I found a nice little outline of blue after I picked up the tarp, so that was then end of spray painting on the asphalt.
As soon as the paint was dry, she decided she hated the lighter color blue and ended up spray painting it green.  She ended up spray painted her dresser knobs to match.  I think the green one looks a lot like the gold they once were.  Lol.

As you can see, the paint bled under the tape a bit, so we had to abandon our original idea to use this cute wavy trim.

But have no fear!  We found this awesome washi tape at the Dollar Tree!!  Yay.

We hadn't jumped on the washi tape bandwagon yet, no I did not think of it immediately.  But it sure did do the trick.  No glue, no mess, just taped it on and all the paint mistakes were covered!  And I've since bought 5 more roles in different designs.

Here they are on the wall above her desk. We're really please with how they turned out. :)

Final Comparison:

Not too shabby for an 11 year old, right?

Thanks for stopping by!

  1. Smart Jr did a great job! Looking good! Is it terrible that I am now eyeing up several storage bins itching to spraypaint them?

Kyle- wishing I was in OG-

    1. Thanks Kyle! She is addicted to spray paint! This colder weather has slowed her down a bit, but there's no stopping her.

  2. I actually liked the two shades of blue/aqua best, but the floral washi (why is it calked that?! I love it myself but good to know dollar stores carry it cheaper than hobby stores) tape is a perfect accent- match to the yellow (? Gold? Lime?) paint. The striped on the blue us good too though more subtle. Surprised the paint bled. Could it be scraped off? But the tape is great as a fix and accent.

  3. And spray paint is great- I use it on tons. A neighbor just suggested I spray my ugly as sin doorbell cover - ugh it's hideous but I looked at new ones at Home Depot and was floored by the prices for new ones!! So she told me how she sprayed hers and replaced the mesh. Next to be added on to do list!!
